Itinerary

Your Altmühl canoeing tour begins in the lovely town of Treuchtlingen. If you so desire, you can visit the local thermal baths or drop in to a Bavarian beer garden in the evening.

You receive your canoe this morning and can finally get out onto the water! For the first few kilometres, the Altmühl leads you quietly through open terrain before the castle in Pappenheim slowly creeps into view. The perfect opportunity to take a break, walk up to this local landmark and explore. When you’re done, your accommodation is just a few paddle strokes away from here.

You set off first thing in the morning, gliding past pretty villages and juniper heaths, until you reach the beer garden in Zimmern, where you can make a pitsop if you wish. Then, you row on past the “Twelve Apostles” rock formation before the excitement increases a few kilometres downstream, as two thrilling canoe slides that’ll put your courage and manoeuvring skills to the test await you. Never fear, though! If you don’t fancy passing through this section, getting out of the water and carrying your canoe past them on foot is also totally fine. Once you’ve passed this stage, it won’t be long before you reach the village of Dollnstein.

You’ll pass the 45-metre-high “Burgsteinfelsen” rock formation, one of Bavaria’s most beautiful geotopes, shortly after you leave Dollnstein and the valley continues to unfold before you as the day progresses. Willibaldsburg Castle comes into view just before you reach Eichstätt, a lively little town with lots of cafés and restaurants – a welcome change of pace!
