Pure pleasure on Valais singletrails

Snow-white mountain peaks, sunny valleys and the idyllic Alps: there are countless reasons to visit Valais, but the one that attracts bikers to the south of the Alps the most is the innumerable singletrails. Starting from the thermal resort of Leukerbad, the Valais Bike takes you on promising paths down the flanks of the Rhône Valley to Gampel-Steg. From there you continue to Raron and take the cable car up to Unterbäch.

Take a deep breath and brace yourself because you will climb up to the promising Moosalp the next day before following a cracking trail down to the Matter Valley. The picturesque Gibidum lake will tempt you to linger awhile, but the bike tour comes to an end shortly thereafter at the Stockalper Palace in Brig. Be it a valley or peak: this bike tour through Valais provides many good reasons for a second visit.

Itinerary

Enjoy the view of the highest peaks in the Valais and a walk on the high plateau of Crans-Montana.

The tour climbs steadily at the beginning. The culminating point is the Cabane de la Tièche where a descent of more than 1'000 metres of altitude down to Leuk begins. Occasionally, you rush past a few alps, later the descent at Varen leads through the vineyards and grapevines of the Rhone Valley. Once in Leuk, the bus takes you up to Leukerbad.

In the morning, you will take the cable car up to Rinderhütte, where the Torrent Trail Bike, one of the most beautiful singletrails in Switzerland, awaits you. Make a turn at Erschmatt and descend into the Rhône Valley. From Raron, the cable car takes you up to the next stage destination, i.e., Unterbäch.

If you want to enjoy the Valais mountain sun a bit longer, you can add a few more laps to the Flowtrail Leukerbad at the top of the first gondola in Rinderhütte before heading towards Untere Feselalp on a balcony trail.

A chairlift takes you up to Brandalp. From here you have to cycle uphill to reach Moosalp. After enjoying the beautiful view, it is time to get back in the saddle and tackle the descent into the Mattertal, via the mountain village of Törbel and into the valley floor to Stalden. Then continue on the beautiful Matterhorn Valley Trail up through the Mattertal to St. Niklaus. From St. Niklaus, a bus will take you to Grächen, the destination of today's stage.

You follow the Mattsand Enduro Trail and the Matterhorn Valley Trail down to Kalpetran and on to Stalden on the valley floor. The cable car takes you up to Gspon and then a beautiful trail leads through the Sädol forest to the Gibidumpass. A comfortable trail leads you from the pass down to the wild Nanztal Valley. You can take a short break at Nidristi Alp before the final trail takes you to Brig.

By bus and train via Goppenstein to Wiler in the Lötschental. If you want to take it easy, take the cable car up to Lauchernalp. If you have enough strength in your legs, you can climb up an unmade winding road to Hockenalp. The ride high above the Lötschental with a view of the Lang glacier is a delight and the descent down to the valley floor leaves you wanting more.

More Lötschental is on the programme today. First, an unhurried walk along the valley floor, then up to Lauchernalp by cable car. After the tough climb from the day before, you now have almost overcome the biggest difference in altitude.

The descent leads in constant ups and downs with magnificent views of the snow-covered Valais peaks out of the Lötschental. From Alp Meiggu, the descent begins leading you with occasional counter ascents up to small hamlets, down into the Rhone Valley. From Sierre, bus ride to St. Luc.

Take the funicular up to Tignousa. From here, the road leads high above the Val d'Anniviers to Zinal. You will encounter a real highlight at the end of the tour. The cable car takes you up to almost 2'700 metres to Sorebois and from here it's all downhill. Past the barrier lake Lac de Moiry to the small mountain village Grimentz. From here bus to Sierre, luggage retrieval and departure.

Tour character

Many metres in altitude are conquered by cable car but there are always challenging climbs. Some of the descents are long, on some days there are over 1'000 metres of descent at a time. Good basic fitness is required for this. The trails are also manageable for averagely experienced bikers and doable with E-MTBs.
