Alpine colours

After a restful night in the mountains, your mountain bike adventure through the Valais begins. The water of the Grimsel reservoir sparkles in the morning light. A thrilling descent to Goms sees for a change of scenery. In Reckingen, gnarled brown wooden houses dot the landscape. A few kilometres further on, the glistening peaks of the Valais four-thousanders greet you.

Where else could you find a better contrast to the deep blue sky other than on the sunny terrace in the village of Bellwald? After cycling through the narrow Twingi Gorge, you arrive in the Binn Valley. With no light pollution, on clear nights the starry sky never fails to astound. At the end of the journey, the Saflisch Pass, with its stunning views, comes into view. The lush green of the Riederwald forest marks the end of the Valais Panorama bike trail.

Itinerary

Day
1
Arrival at the Grimsel Pass

After starting at the Grimsel Pass, this stage takes you past the Totesee lake and then along a scenic high-altitude trail to the Üerlichergale alp. From here, you’ll follow a forest road downhill to Ulrichen. This is a good time to make a pitstop, as the route then continues steeply uphill via Chietal to Moosmatte. Once you reach the top, a wonderful single trail leads to Flesche. From there, the route continues downhill through the forest to the Rhône Valley and the village of Reckingen.

Today, you’ll first head south along the Rhône. Shortly after you pass Sand, the route leads away from the cycle path and along an exciting single trail to Egguti. Ernen is the first larger village you’ll encounter along the way, followed by a longer ascent to Alpe Frid.

Then, continue along forest roads and single trails until you get to Z’Mübach. Small trails lead to Mühlebach in the Rappen Valley. You then have a suspension bridge to cross (NB: you have to push your bike across). Then it’s just a short cable car ride from Fürgangen up to Bellwald.

Today begins with a cable car ride up to the Bellwald bike park. The ‘Into the Wild’ trail is a thrilling start to your day, whereas the descent to Ried in the Rhône Valley is a little more leisurely, taking you past the hamlet of Egga and the St. Anna chapel. You’ll already be familiar with the suspension bridge over the Rhône, having crossed it yesterday. Then, a trail leads you through the Twingi Gorge and into the Binn Valley.

This final stage begins with a steady climb towards Brunegge. The last few metres lead over narrow paths to the top of the pass and are quite challenging. Enough so that a break st the top is well earned! Take in the views before the long descent on single trails via Rosswald down into the Rhône Valley. Your arrival in Brig concludes this tour – it’s now time to collect your luggage and depart.

Tour character

There are some metres of altitude to negotiate every day. Not every trail has a cable car. A good level of fitness is required for the long ascents. The trails are varied and flowing. Good technique is necessary to reach the valley comfortably.

Leave your car at home! For every cycling, biking, or hiking tour in Switzerland, each participant receives an SBB coupon that grants a CHF 10 discount on their train ticket for the journey. The discount can be redeemed in the SBB online shop or via the SBB app.

For many trips, we use luggage counters at train stations at the beginning and end of the journey for convenient baggage drop-off and collection. This can easily be combined with your train travel. If you have a GA travelcard, you can indicate this when booking, and we will credit the amount to your invoice.

If you don’t use the coupon for your trip, you can redeem it later in the year. Please note that retroactive refunds are not possible for administrative reasons.

Travel documents "digital"

In the future, we will reduce the amount of printed documents. With your tour dossier, you will receive instructions on how to navigate using the Eurotrek Travel Guide App. Additional information will be available online.

Before your trip, you will receive a small document package containing:

  • Your travel itinerary
  • Luggage tags
  • Instructions for using the app
