Itinerary
After you’ve dropped your luggage off in Lausanne, the Herzroute begins at the Olympic capital’s elegant quays. The ascent over the Lavaux vineyards, a UNESCO World Heritage site, offers spectacular views of Lake Geneva and the Alps. Picturesque panoramic sections and lush landscapes will entice you to keep going until you reach Romont.
Starting from Romont, the tour boasts a wealth of stunning scenery, taking in the nearby pre-Alpine rolling hills and Three Lakes area, including the historic towns of Avenches and Murten. Your journey continues along the fjord-like Schiffenen Lake to medieval municipality of Laupen.
From Laupen, the route takes you through the Bernese Hinterland to Längenberg, from where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Alps and, a little further on, of Lake Thun. You then press on via Riggisberg to the moraine lake area around Amsoldingen before you ultimately reach Thun, today’s destination.
The ‘royal stage’ features an ascent to Heiligenschwendi, high above Lake Thun, allowing for magnificent views of the Alps. Afterwards, the route descends into the forests of Eriz, a hilly, fairytale landscape that slowly transitions into the Emmental.
From Langnau, the route takes you into the secluded reaches of the Emmental. The beautiful vantage points are true highlights of this quintessentially Swiss landscape. The historic old town of Burgdorf is a great place to wind down after an eventful day.
When you leave Burgdorf, the route leads you into the Emmental’s unique hilly landscape, the spectacular views stretching from the Jura to the Alps. The magnificent farms along the way to the medieval town of Willisau are sure to draw you in, too.
This part of the tour boasts a scenic experience as you ride between the historic towns of Willisau, Sempach and Zug. Stunning backdrops of rolling hills, fruit trees and lakes accompany you on your journey. Highlights include the quaint chapels and breathtaking views as far as the Uri Alps.
Today’s stage begins in Zug’s romantic old town and continues through charming landscapes to Unterägeri. The route offers impressive views of the mountains, stretching to the Ägerisee lake and far beyond, and continuing on to the Rothenturm raised bog. The Chatzenstrick crossing completes the stage.
Einsiedeln is a true highlight, after which you ride along the northern shore of Lake Sihl. The steep ascent to the highest point of the entire Herzroute and a rapid descent to Lake Zürich are followed by serenity and silence in the Buechberg forest. Rapperswil, your destination today, is a charming, welcoming place.
Wetlands and hilly landscapes set the scene in the Zürich Oberland. From the slopes of the Bachtel mountain, you can marvel at magnificent views over Lake Zürich and the Alps. Then, the tour takes you into the Töss Valley, a little-known area within the canton of Zürich, and then via the Goldingen Valley and the Ricken mountain pass into Toggenburg.
Tucked away in the Toggenburg area are Krinau and Libingen, two hidden gems we’re sure you’ll love. On a clear day, the Säntis in all its glory will come into view once you cross the Thur river. Appenzellerland boasts some stunning scenery to behold upon your arrival, before you continue on to today’s destination – Herisau.
A vibrant region of eastern Switzerland, powerful insights into the Appenzellerland and the Alpstein backdrop await you today – an exciting contrast between the Rhine Valley and the stage town of Altstätten. Challenging topography and a varied landscape make this stage one of the most diverse on this tour.
The ‘St. Anton’ lookout point promises magnificent views from Lake Constance over the Rhine Valley and on to the Vorarlberg Alps. The Herzroute then takes you via Walzenhausen and Rheineck until you reach the harbour town of Romanshorn. Your arrival here concludes this tour – it’s now time to collect your luggage and depart.
