Itinerary
The Herzroute begins on Lausanne's splendid promenade. The climb via the Lavaux vineyards, a UNESCO World Heritage, affords spectacular views of Lac Léman and the Alps. Picturesque panoramic sections and green pastoral landscapes as far as Romont.
The route from Romont offers a wealth of impressions and touches the rolling Alpine foothills as well as the Three Lakes region with the historic towns of Avenches and Murten. It leads along the fjord-like Schiffenensee lake to the medieval town of Laupen.
The route leads from Laupen through the Bernese hinterland up to Längenberg. This point offers phenomenal views of the Alpine chain and soon also of Lake Thun. The route continues via Riggisberg into the moraine lake area around Amsoldingen and finally to Thun.
After climbing the «King's Stage» up to Heiligenschwendi high above Lake Thun, you're rewarded with wonderful Alpine views. The route then dips into the forests of Eriz, a fabulous rolling landscape that flows gently into the Emmental.
From Langnau, the route leads through the peaceful open countryside of the Emmental. The beautiful scenic vantage points are highlights in this primeval Swiss landscape. The historic old town of Burgdorf is the ideal place to round off this eventful excursion.
Just after Burgdorf, the route leads through the unique rolling landscape of the Emmental. You are treated to views extending from the Jura to the Alps. On the way to the tiny medieval town of Willisau, impressive inns offer an invitation to take a break.
This section offers wonderful scenery between the historic towns of Willisau, Sempach and Zug. Gently rolling hills, fruit trees and lakes adorn the route. Highlights are provided by attractive chapels as well as breathtaking views of the Alps of Canton Uri.
In Zug the journey begins in the romantic old town. Through charming scenery to Unterägeri. Far above the Aegerisee lake, the route offers impressive views of the mountains. On to the high moor of Rothenturm. The «Chatzenstrick» pass rounds off the stage.
From the highlight of Einsiedeln, the route follows the north shore of the Sihlsee lake. After the steep climb to the highest point of the Herzroute and a fast descent to Zürichsee lake, you reach the tranquillity of the Buechberg forest. Rapperswil welcomes travellers with its southern charm.
Wetlands and rolling hills characterize the Zürcher Oberland. The slopes of the Bachtel offer views of the Zürichsee lake and the Alps. Then into the Tösstal, a little-known area of Canton Zurich. Via the pre-Alpine Goldingertal valley and over the Ricken Pass into Toggenburg.
The cosy corners of Toggenburg as highlights. With Krinau and Libingen you visit two little-known gems. After crossing the River Thur, in good weather you see the Santis mountain in all its glory. Impressive arrival in the Appenzell region before approaching the stage point of Herisau.
A powerful piece of Eastern Switzerland, a strong insight into the Appenzell region and the backdrop of the Alpstein. Fascinating contrasts between the Rhine Valley and the stage stop of Altstätten. Challenging topography and varied landscape make this one of the most diverse stages.
Differing landscapes, cantons and locations are crossed in a compact area. The vantage point of St. Anton rewards you with magnificent views of the Bodensee (Lake Constance), the Rhine Valley and the Vorarlberg Alps. The Herzroute reaches the harbour town of Rorschach via Walzenhausen and Rheineck.
