Free as the wind

Once the Bergell valley winds reach the Maloja pass, these bodies of air rush down into the Engadine valley, forming what is known as the “Maloja Wind” – just the brisk boost you need for your cycling holiday! You will pass by kite surfers on the Lakes of Sils and Silvaplana and reach the Church of Saint Maurice in St. Mortiz, and its impressive tower. Wait … why is the tower leaning? Did the Maloja Wind make it do that? Then, you’ll continue through the small villages in the Upper Engadine until you reach the Swiss National Park. Up on the Fuorn Pass, savour the sweet scents and floral fragrances drifting up from the Vinschgau Valley!

You’ll soon arrive in Santa Maria Val Müstair and just a few kilometres further on, you’ll cross the border into South Tyrol, Italy, and reach Lago di Resia, a man-made lake with a partially submerged bell tower. When you return to Switzerland, you’ll pass through typical Engadine villages, and cycle upstream to Zernez. Only a gentle breeze remains from the Maloja wind, which has taken you through one of Switzerland's most beautiful regions

Itinerary

Day
1
Arrival to Maloja

Countless kites and paragliders float above the lakes of Sils and Silvaplana on beautiful days, offering a fantastic panoramic view together with the snowy peaks of the Upper Engadine. Glamorous city life in St. Moritz followed by contemplative peace in Celerina.

The small villages of the Engadine are strung together like a string of pearls and offer beautiful façade paintings and well-preserved village centres. S-chanf is the destination of the world-famous ski marathon, Zernez the gateway to the Swiss National Park.

Today’s tour takes you through the national park and over the Ofen Pass into Val Müstair. The ascent up to the Fuorn Pass is challenging, but the views across the mountain chain and the forests make everything worthwhile. When you go back down into the valley, it won’t be long before you reach Val Müstair. The village of Santa Maria Val Müstair may only be tiny, but the cultural diversity this place offers is nothing to be sneezed at!

Today, you’ll leave Val Müstair and Switzerland behind you as you cross the border into Italy. Comfortable bike paths take you north through South Tyrol. You’ll pass the Lago di San Valentino alla Muta and Lago di Resia lakes on your way to Reschen. It’s well worth making a pitstop here.

After a short detour into Austria, you’ll return to the Engadine today. The route is simple – just follow the Inn until you reach today’s stage town of Scuol. Take your time to marvel at the original, beautifully painted local houses or try a few of Graubünden’s culinary delights.

Before setting off, be sure to fill your water bottles at the village fountain and sample some of Scuol’s delicious mineral water. Today’s stage takes you further along the Inn and past listed Engadine villages. Guarda in particular, one of the most beautiful villages in Graubünden, is not to be missed, especially as the majestic three-thousanders are always in view. Individual departure after arrival in Zernez.

Tour character

The "highlight" of this tour is the trip over the Ofenpass when visiting the Münstertal. Otherwise, it is rather the constant ups and downs in the Inn Valley that demand strength. However, the short stages make this tour easy for normally trained cyclists.
