Ruinaulta gorge, Lake Constance, Rhinefall

The Rhine Route spans the east of Switzerland in a wide arc. It begins with a tough pass ride over the Oberalp, the headwaters of the Rhine, leads through the Romansh-speaking Surselva, offers impressive views of the wild Ruinaulta Gorge and visits the Rhaetian capital of Chur. The Rhine valley is a windy place, but as soon as you've passed the vineyards of Maienfeld, you cycle on the Rhine dam towards the vast Lake Constance, where orchards, castles and cheerful tourist chatter adorn the shores of the green and silver shimmering "Swabian sea".

Itinerary

The clear source of the Rhine rises at the Tomasee, not far from the Oberalp pass, the biggest “obstacle”on the Rhine-Route, which is why casual bikers start their trip in Disentis. In Val Tujetsch lies one of the richest and most fascinating sources of mineral deposits in the Alps and also the monastery village of Disentis.

The Surselva is the largest Romansch-speaking area in the Grisons region. Up and down we go, following the burbling Rhine through pretty little hamlets.

The amazing wild gorge of the Anterior Rhine is known as the Grand Canyon of Switzerland. Chur, the oldest city north of the Alps, has the highest density of restaurants. Spend a moment in this city before continuing your path along the tranquilly flowing river. In the evening, Maienfeld awaits you, home of the famous Blauburgunder wine.

The Bündner Herrschaft, Graubunden’s fertile garden and winery lies on a mound of slate detritus. It is also the home of Heidi, Geissenpeter and the Alpöhi.

The St. Galler Rheintal is an area often cosseted by the warm föhn wind. Much land has been won by the correction of the Alpenrhein waters in the Rheintal. This has also created Europe’s largest freshwater delta with a wealth of birdlife.

The Lake of Constance (Bodensee): the soul of Europe. The area around the shimmering silver-green «Swabian sea» is an ancient cultural landscape. Despite its lively lakeside scene, Thurgau remains a serene slice of countryside with castles and extensive orchards.

The lovely landscape along the long ribbon of the Untersee appealed to Napoleon, the richly-decorated town of Stein am Rhein attracts thousands of visitors every year, as does Europe’s mightiest waterfall, the Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen.

The Hochrhein has made its bed between Schwarzwald and the Jura, at times wide and unhurried, at others narrow and wild. Attractive floodplains and historic little villages add cultural enjoyment to this stage.

Starting in the Bad Zurzach wellness oasis, the stage leads to Koblenz, the historic old town with 4 bridges close to the Klingnau reservoir. The Rheinfelden destination – Switzerland's oldest “Zähringer” town – follows soon after the picturesque little town of Laufenburg.

Cycle where the ancient Romans lived and enjoyed their games: Augusta Raurica with its silver treasure. The agglomeration is already pulsating, the asphalt sweating, commuters groaning; Basel beckons with hustle, bustle and cultural attractions.

Tour character

The height profile of the Rhine-Route is very steep at the beginning – because the Oberalp Pass and the alpine district of Surselva are followed by the spectacular panoramic stretch through the «Swiss Grand Canyon»: the wildly romantic Rhine Gorge. Afterwards you ride – in a jaunty up and down – through the wine growing region of the Bündner Herrschaft. From Bad Ragaz however the route generally follows the Rhine.
