Hiking along the Italian border

The Fiore di Pietra mountain station at the summit of Monte Generoso stretches upwards like a flower reaching towards the sun. This not only characterises the region perfectly, it’s also the starting point for a wonderful hiking holiday that takes you through the Valle di Muggio and the border area with Italy’s Lombardy region.

The valley itself is considered one of the most beautiful in Switzerland … with small, sparsely populated villages and countless sheep and goats grazing on the rolling green slopes dotted throughout. Starting from the village of Scudellate, in the upper part of Valley di Muggio, you can enjoy the stunning views of the surrounding lakes after climbing only a few metres in altitude.

Itinerary

After you’ve dropped your luggage off in Capolago, you take the train up to Monte Generoso. You then follow a short section of the Monte Generoso railway tracks before descending into Valle di Muggio, passing sheep and small mountain huts along the way. Today’s destination is the tiny village of Scudellate.

Today, you can look forward to hiking along the Italian border and up to the summit of Monte Generoso. You’ll then follow the railway line downhill for a short distance until you reach the Bellavista halfway station. This time, though, you cross the plain to Muggiasca and press on to the hamlet of Roncapiano, from where narrow paths take you back to Scudellate.

You start today with a downhill walk to the little village of Muggio and then on to Cabbio. After that, you branch off and follow a stretch of paved road until you reach the tiny hamlet of Uggine.

You’ll then cross the valley floor, where the source of the Breggia river is located, and hike back on an idyllic path on the other side of the valley, following the river. At the Bruzella mill, you can dip your toes into the water before continuing on to Casima, which is the end of this stage.

An easy hiking trail will take you past small farms and through rustic countryside today. The pointed church spires coming into view announce your arrival at the small villages that line today’s stage. Treat yourself to a well-deserved pitstop at Alpe Caviano and marvel at the magnificent views over the Alps before your journey draws to a close. Your arrival in Chiasso concludes this tour – it’s now time to collect your luggage and depart.

Tour character

The paths are easy to negotiate, but good physical conditioning and surefootedness are required due to the occasionally steep ascents and descents.

For many trips, we use luggage counters at train stations at the beginning and end of the journey for convenient baggage drop-off and collection. This can easily be combined with your train travel. If you have a GA travelcard, you can indicate this when booking, and we will credit the amount to your invoice.

If you don’t use the coupon for your trip, you can redeem it later in the year. Please note that retroactive refunds are not possible for administrative reasons.

Travel documents "digital"

In the future, we will reduce the amount of printed documents. With your tour dossier, you will receive instructions on how to navigate using the Eurotrek Travel Guide App. Additional information will be available online.

Before your trip, you will receive a small document package containing:

  • Your travel itinerary
  • Luggage tags
  • Instructions for using the app
  • Any applicable vouchers

While traveling, you can easily navigate with the Eurotrek Travel Guide App. In addition to your digitally mapped route, the app provides further details about your booked trip. The app is also available offline, as long as the trip is downloaded in advance.
