A legendary tour

Legend has it that a giant once lived in the Alpstein mountains. In the evenings, he would lie down in the Schwendibach valley, rest his head on the Meglisalp’s lush meadows and gaze up at the summit of the Säntis in the mornings. Nobody’s seen hide nor hair of the giant for a long time, of course, but you can look forward to the same views he would have had on this multi-day tour.

You’ll fall in love with the green valleys, sparkling lakes and the Alpstein mountains’ ridge paths and panoramic peaks. What’s more … the legend goes on to tell how the giant packed the local people and houses into his sack because he liked the area so much. You don’t have to go as far as he did, of course, but you are guaranteed to return home with fond memories of your Alpstein experience.

Itinerary

Arrival in Gossau, luggage drop-off and train journey to Wasserauen. Wasserauen railway station is actually the end of the line, but it’s here where your tour through the Alpstein moiuntains starts. The cable car takes you up to Ebenalp and, from here, you hike past the Aescher mountain inn, with its famous Wildkirchli caves, and on to the Schäfler restaurant.

A longer descent then takes you to the Mesmer mountain inn, before you follow the steep hairpin bends over the Ageteplatte and up to Rossmad, where you can enjoy stunning views across the entire massif. Directly below the Meglisalp is where you’ll spend the night.

The tour leads back up to the Wagenlücke, just a stone’s throw from the Säntis. Make a brief pit stop for some refreshments if you wish before carrying on to the next section. The hike over to the Rotstein Pass, which is where you’ll spend the night tonight, is exposed, but the passages are well secured with ropes.

Today’s stage begins with a descent towards Meglisalp that follows winding roads. Shortly before you reach the mountain inn, turn onto the steep path up to the Wilderalpsattel. Follow the blue and white marked hiking trails and continue over the Marwees ridge. The trail descends steeply below the Bogartenlücke, and it’s just one more short climb to the Hundsteinhütte.

This morning, you descend to Fählensee and, if you wish, you can make a short stop at the Bollenwees mountain restaurant. This is followed by a wonderful hike over the Saxerlücke, Furgglen and Stauberenfirst up to the Hoher Kasten. From here, a leisurely cable car ride takes you down to Brülisau, where you board the bus to the hotel in Weissbad.

Tour character

The stages are not long, but the constant steep ascents and descents are challenging. Some of the paths are also exposed and quite narrow. Tricky passages are secured with ropes and steps. T3 on the SAC scale. With the exception of the Schafberg passage on day 3, all hikes on this tour take place on red and white marked hiking trails. A good level of fitness, surefootedness, a head for heights and mountain tour experience are required.
