A Swiss Gem

The Maderanertal is a narrow, sparsely populated valley, nestled within a picturesque mountain landscape, which can only be reached using a narrow road. Only the foremost part is permanently inhabited. The rear sections of the valley, its steep flanks and the numerous side valleys are mainly visited by hikers. This expedition takes you into the valley via the rarely frequented Fellilücke.

You’ll then visit various mountain inns in and around the Maderanertal before you depart via the Fuorcla Cavadiras. When you’re done, you’ll have ultimately trekked through one of Switzerland’s most pristine alpine valleys. A real gem of a tour, featuring memorable experiences you’ll never want to forget.

Itinerary

Arrival in Andermatt and luggage drop-off. Whether by train, by car or on foot, the route from Andermatt is a steep climb for everyone. Hikers don’t get to experience much of the road or railway line, though! The ascent leads through the skiing area to Lake Luter and then on to the Fellilücke mountain pass. The subsequent descent to the Treschhütte is a steep one.

From the Felli Valley, the route climbs almost 1,000 metres to the Pörtlilücke, leading past Alpine inns and later over coarse gravel and rubble. The somewhat rocky terrain makes this tour quite challenging. Plus, the stunningly deep blue Spillauisee awaits you about halfway down the descent.

If you’re brave, why not bring your swimming gear and take a refreshing dip in the lake? You can warm up again in the hot tub once you reach the Etzlihütte.

A long descent through the Etzli Valley takes you down to Bristen. After this short detour into civilisation, a cable car ride takes you back up to the other side of the valley. After arriving at the Golzern mountain station, the route climbs steeply up to the Bockistock. Once you’ve reached the summit, you can continue on a relaxed hike to the Windgällenhütte. Stunning views across the entire valley and Uri’s magnificent mountains await you.

Rocky paths lead you from the inn down into the Maderanertal valley. On the way, you’ll cross small streams and rivers – sometimes balancing on stepping stones, sometimes negotiating narrow bridges. The lower valley’s wonderful waterfalls are a sight to behold. After traversing the valley floor, the route continues steadily uphill to the Hüfihütte.

If you like a challenge, you should definitely take the “Schafweg”. The bypass on the normal mountain hiking trail is easier, but involves a higher climb. Both options lead to the stunningly beautiful Brunniboden, with a turquoise-blue stream babbling across it. The ascent to Fuorcla da Cavardiras at the end of the day is a yet another challenge. You’ll find the inn shortly after you reach the top of the pass.

At the end of your tour, you leave Uri’s stunning mountains behind you and embark on a long descent through the Val Cavardiras and Val Russein valleys. Once you reach the Surselva, a flat agricultural track takes you to Disentis. The monastery towers greet you from afar, signalling the end of your trekking tour.

Tour character

T3-T4 on the SAC scale. The tour leads through Alpine terrain, some of which is partly rocky or blocked. A good level of fitness, surefootedness, a head for heights and mountain tour experience are required. Tricky passages are secured with ropes and steps. Day 5’s “Schafweg”, marked in blue and white, is particularly difficult. The rest of the treks are on red and white marked hiking trails. The stage distances are manageable, but there are always steep ascents and descents and, in turn, significant differences in altitude to negotiate.
