Glorious Glarus

Glarus is well worth a closer look. You’ll find countless fossils in the rocks, and tough Alpine flowers and hardy mosses endow this otherwise barren backdrop with splashes of colour. The presence of clearly visible rock formations in parts of this mountain world have led to it being designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site … and with good reason!

As the magnificent view sweeps into the distance, the jagged peaks and rough plains dot throughout the landscape and the Via Glaralpina, one of Switzerland’s most beautiful long-distance hiking trails, runs through this area. Despite the magnificent mountain scenery all around you, which never fails to enchant visitors to the area, you should probably focus on the task at hand while here, as this tour is no walk in the park and definitely not suitable for beginners! However, experienced mountain hikers who tackle the Via Glaralpina will be rewarded with a fantastic hiking holiday they’ll never forget.

Itinerary

Day
1
Arrival in Glarus

Take the bus to Rhodannenberg. The idyllic southern shore of the Klöntalersee lake is the perfect starting point for your hike.

You can make a pit stop for refreshments in Richisau if you wish, before continuing on the Via Glaralpina and into the Rossmatter valley. The long path leads you 1,000 metres up to the Glärnischhütte.

The start of today’s stage is deceptively easy. The first section is slightly downhill and the walk is relatively simple until you reach Zeinenstaffel. From here, the route to the Zeinenfurggel takes you uphill on steep, blue and white marked paths. The trail leads over gravel and rocky terrain and is particularly challenging in wet conditions.

The unique rock formations just before the crossing are particularly impressive. After the Zeinenfurggel, an equally steep descent leads down to Alp Bösbächi. Your final “obstacle” before the cable car ride to Burstberg is the Seeblengrad.

Today, you take the cable car back to Gumen and continue via Ortstockhaus to Bärentritt. A considerable climb awaits you here, but the path is well secured with ropes and chains. You’ll then continue through gravelly terrain up to the Furggele.

If you wish, you can take a detour to the Ortstock – the path to the “Glarus Matterhorn” is marked and from the Furggele you can reach the summit in around 40 minutes. The descent takes you over a steep gravel field to Glattalp. You can then cool off with a dip in the mountain lake before continuing to the SAC inn.

Blue and white marked paths lead you across the Mären plateau today. The trail through this karst area is well marked, but the hike through the rocky terrain requires a high level of focus.

It takes you over stony fields up to the Firner Loch and then across challenging terrain down to the Laucheren plateau. A number of hairpin bends snake through the Daierwald forest on your way to Alp Urnerboden.

Tour character

Some long stages with plenty of ascents and climbs. The most difficult section is the hike over the Zeinenfurggel on day 2. The tours follow blue-white and red-white marked trails. The Via Glaralpina is also well signposted with its own signs. Exposed passages at the crossings are secured with ropes and chains. T3-T4 on the SAC scale. A good level of fitness, surefootedness, a head for heights and mountain tour experience are required.
